My name is Amy Morris and I am a trained birth doula and postpartum doula. A birth doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. A postpartum doula is a specially trained and experienced professional who provides non-medical support – including education, breastfeeding instruction and more – to a new mother directly following the birth of a child
A Birth Doula:
*Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
*Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
*Stays with the woman through the labor
*Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience
*Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint, and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions
A Postpartum Doula:
*Has a role that changes from day to day, as the needs of the family change
*Does whatever a mother needs to best enjoy and care for her new baby
*Is there to educate, they share information about baby care with parents, as well as teach siblings and partners to “mother the mother”
*Assists with breastfeeding education
*Also make sure the mother is fed, well hydrated and comfortable
